“When an opponent comes forward, move in and greet him; if he wants to pull back, send him on his way.”
— Morihei Ueshiba (O-Sensei)
Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba early in the 20th century after his long and varied studies of older Japanese martial arts. Aikido Katoh Dojo was established in 2020 under the Aikikai Foundation, founded by Morihei Ueshiba. Our practice mainly follows the Aikikai Hombu Dojo way, with some influence from Aikido Tada-juku and New York Aikikai, where Katoh has trained.
A unique point of aikido is that there is no competition: it is training for your mind and body. We think of aikido as a path of self-development, whose core philosophy is overcoming opponents without physical harm, through one’s own movement. It represents “the way of harmony”.
